Artist Statement
My feminist, interdisciplinary art practice considers the interplay between subject and object and the liminal nature of our bodies. I create objects and spaces that may allow the viewer to re-experience and recall moments of transformation from childhood. I am interested in the boundaries of our bodies and how we are in relationship to our domestic spaces and to each other. I am interested in the pregnant/nursing/mothering body and how it holds and cares for other bodies and how our bodies change, age and need repair.

Artist Statement
Grace Cross (b. Harare, Zimbabwe 1988) is a material painter who draws symbols about motherhood, home, belief structures, and land; making shipting recipe's rooted in feminism, history, performative archaeology and African cosmology, to reflect her experiences of cultural transmission. Her painting practice, since the birth of her daughter, focuses on female storytelling, spirituality, and mining symbols of motherhood in her lush and colourfilled canvases. Her paintings seek to represent a cosmological world, where paint weaves images together to work as spells or incantations. The painded symbols thread ideas together, daming and mending, compositionally sewing the symbolic into the real, tethering the objects to one another. She traces a history of laboring women, their bloodline, their red thread of fate, through her paintings - <em>placenta red, metnrual red, nipple-suked-raw red. </em>This is the tie that binds - an umbilical cord - the maternal line. The thread is fine buth strong; it will not come undone; even as it unspools, running from the distant past to the present, from one canvas to another. Cross lives and works as a mother and painter in Cape Town

Artist Statement
In the fall of 2018, I kept track of what I was doing all day long in a spreadsheet. Each activity I<br />assigned to one of half a dozen different categories, including child care, housework, art<br />practice, and sleep. I picked one week of that time period and during the course of my artist<br />residency at the Women’s Center for Creative Work in Los Angeles, turned it into Timesheet:<br />November 4–10, 2018, a work comprising seven weavings, one representing each day of that<br />week. I wove it during weekly studio hours, on my floor loom that I moved into the space for the<br />exhibition. By giving these ephemeral activities form through my weaving, I have created an<br />analog data visualization of invisible and undervalued domestic labor and transformed it into an<br />artwork with monetary and cultural value.

<p class="p0"><span class="c0">Alana Tyson’s work attempts to make sense of the world she inhabits. As an immigrant to the UK and a natural observer, she feels highly responsive to the contradictions of everyday life.</span></p>

<p class="p4"><span class="c0">Tyson is drawn to dualities and incongruities. A commonality between her chosen materials is their link to domesticity. Everyday items, such as suit lining or crochet cotton, become carriers of meaning and reflections upon Tyson’s deep-rooted responses. The material contrasts and tension within Tyson’s work transforms the mundane into the visceral.</span></p>

Artist Statement
As an artist I have utilized my daily life as muse; my work inevitably reflects this. After spending years on a body of work, I felt as if I had nowhere left to go. I found myself alone in my studio, in a new city, with a young child, a changing relationship with my parents as they age and I mature, and a vastly different partner as he met a new stage in his life. I turned my eyes away from those relationships that had so long inspired me, toward the objects that surrounded me. The objects were real, solid, reliable, and less malleable, less fleeting, tangible markers of this moment in time. The pile of trucks my son left on the floor was less ephemeral then the fact that he was changing at an “unfathomable speed.” The dirty blanket on the couch was reliably there while my partner was often on his own journey. The beauty of the sunlight on the plants, that I never seemed to have time to water, made me remember why I had plants in the first place. The objects became what located me in this state of transition.
I began looking at the objects I could pick up, touch and feel for grounding and using them as my subject. I began to explore the psychological landscape of the domestic space through various media. Zooming in, slowing down, creating labor in the small seemingly insignificant moments is an attempt to bring awareness and attention to the glimpses, touches, and objects that create our daily experience. Through my labor intensive drawing and the witness of my camera I invite the viewer to slow down, look around and notice their own landscape… a landscape of their domestic world, their emotional state, and their mind.
My graphite drawings allow me to focus on the importance of these small objects or moments, amplifying their texture, tones and detail, abstracting their meaning and role while simultaneously elevating them. Through this work I am able to replicate my beloved process of the darkroom via my technique of drawing with projection & enlargement, mirroring the process of silver halide printing and the use of a grain focuser, the tool which brings a negative to clarity, and using technique to develop the tonal variations important to the image. The photographs capture the document of this moment in time, in the home, my life and my psychological experience. The photographs with their rich saturated colors make the subject vibrant and seductive while the drawings remain in black and white concentrating on the quiet completive experience being investigated via the work
The images vary from small to large scale and play with ideas of hierarchy through this variation in size and the installation. The work varies from being formally framed and hung while others would remain in a place of process, i.e. hung low/ high on the wall, with and without frame, leaning on the floor, in suspension. This formal exploration is meant to allude to the hierarchies that exist in our mind about our domestic space and both its value and importance as well as its dismissal and ignorance of.
My intention is to create a conceptual presentation of an intimate subject. My goal is for the mediums to work together as one in formal groupings and visual relationships. Bringing living, breathing things together with the objects that surround me all of which I touch and care for to feel more alive and present in this moment.

Artist Statement
<p>In my artwork and creative projects, I use textile based media as a tool for communication; to record and speak about the individual, society, and the hand of the maker. I work with concepts of time, labor, and cloth as a tool for personal expression. My current body of work explores the value of cloth on both a personal and societal level.</p>
<p>I create visual recordings through the use of detritus from my life and studio. These elements and works from the past are employed into new forms that serve to document and comment on the material objects that tangibly define the work of my hands. These are woven pieces, broken forms, and cut offs of previous works. They track time and place, creating a sequence of objects that allude to written text and recording through the use of fiber, concrete, and metal. Through community based interactive weavings, I am able to create works in collaboration with diverse individuals, providing each person a platform to express their ideas. I value textile objects and processes and by bringing them out of my studio, and recreating the way they are being perceived, I work to give the viewer a new perspective on their value.</p>

My work is engaged in discourses around feminism, labor and technological change. Embedded in the works are confluences of technique and meaning, craft and digital media, and everyday materials with fine art forms. The work is situated at the nexus of life and art, and walks a boundary between work and love. Labor and love act broadly as dual domains which sustain my interest in the ways a subject acts and is acted upon by intersecting social, economic, intimate, emotional and political forces. While some works describe the ways in which labor and love converge in personal and economic experience, others begin to search for meanings of love that may deviate from material, economic conditions to transform the terms of our intimate and collective relationships.
